Q+A with BOH ZINE

JASON, WOULD YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF? I’m a thief and a shitkicker and, uh, I’d like to be famous!” Actually that’s a Dawn Davenport quote from Female Trouble. Hi. I’m an illustrator, book designer, potter… and, uh, I’d like to be famous!

WHAT GOT YOU INTO CREATING POTTERY? I spend all day working on the computer which is super irritating and most of my “real” work is print based and flat. I needed a creative outlet that was as far removed from the digital world as possible and ceramics filled the bill perfectly. Playing with mud is fun.

HOW DO YOU BEGIN A POTTERY PROJECT? It all starts with a sketch (usually drawn on my phone with my finger) and an vague idea. Then I go about figuring out how to actually make it in real life. It’s rarely as simple as I think it will be and that’s the fun/horror of the creative process.

WHAT ART DO YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH? Illustrators, graphic designers, and furniture designers. M. Sasek, Charley Harper, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Neville Brody, Gio Ponti, Philippe Starck, Ettore Sottsass, George Nakashima… I’m really digging Paul Evans' brutalist sculptural cabinets and credenzas from the 60’s and 70’s at the moment. And Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi’s textiles (she was the lead designer of textiles at Marimekko in the 50’s).

WHAT FOOD, DRINK, & SONG INSPIRES YOU? A perfectly grilled filet, a Tito’s Gibson (very dry), and anything by The Smiths.

NAME THREE ARTISTS YOU’D LIKE TO BE COMPARED TO. Alexander Girard, Paul Rand, Joan Collins

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST… WHO WOULD WIN A FIGHT BETWEEN MADONNA AND MORRISSEY? Madonna, of course. That was a rhetorical question, right?
